CHIeru Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President & Representative Director: Mutsumi Kawai), a provider of ICT solutions for school education, announced the release of the latest update to CaLabo® EX, a CALL (computer-assisted language learning) system that has been adopted by more than 200 universities and holds a market share of over 50%* in Japan. This update enhances integration with schools’ authentication infrastructure and cloud environments, and improves usability on 4K displays.
*CHIeru’s system has been adopted by 228 universities (as of the end of FY2025; cumulative over 15 years). Universities in Japan with CALL classrooms are estimated to account for slightly more than 50% of all universities in Japan, or approximately 420 universities.
Development Background
Universities have recently been investing actively in their IT infrastructure, and the adoption of Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) as a cloud authentication platform and the use of OneDrive as cloud storage are spreading rapidly. To respond to these changes in the ICT environment of educational institutions and to support more flexible and efficient operations, this update strengthens integration with authentication platforms and cloud storage.
Main Updates
○ Enhanced cloud integration (1): Automatic attendance linked with Entra ID
Learners’ names recorded during automatic attendance can now be registered using their display names in Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory). By integrating with the authentication platform already used by the school, the notation of learners’ names can be standardized, making attendance management more accurate and efficient.
○ Enhanced cloud integration (2): OneDrive can be specified as the destination for file distribution and more
OneDrive can now be specified as the destination (target location) for distributing and collecting files. With this function, files can be distributed to and collected from OneDrive folders mounted on client devices directly, making it smoother to distribute teaching materials and collect student work using cloud storage.
○ Other enhancement: Support for 4K displays (custom scaling)
In high-resolution display environments—such as 4K displays with custom scaling set to 150%—the UI was sometimes displayed out of position, causing screens not to display correctly or some operations to be unavailable. With support for custom scaling in this update, the UI now displays correctly without misalignment and can be operated comfortably even in these high-resolution environments.
